After 3 visits to DCRA, 4 contractor bids, and many hours of site planning, the concrete removal, site grading and cleanup work got underway last week. First step was to remove a stolen abandoned minivan off the site (thanks DC MPD!). Then the goal was to remove all the concrete and asphalt from the site to allow better drainage, and have a clean slate to build the community garden on. To save on costs I spent a few days pulling up about half of the concrete on the site with a sledge hammer and pickax, then the guys at The Construction Group helped with further excavation, hauling and recycling the concrete, and grading the garden area. The remaining work took a crew of 4 three full days– just the jackhammering of a small 60 ft2 area took 7 hours. With the purchase of an old push mower from a neighbor, things are starting to look good.
